FEAR OF MISSING OUT (FOMO) IN THE DIGITAL ERA By: Lira Selia Daeng Ramli

Fear of Missing Out, or FOMO, is the feeling we get when we think others are having fun or doing better than us, and we are not part of it. This often happens in the digital age, especially when we scroll through social media. We see people traveling, attending concerts, buying new things, or spending time with friends. These posts can make us feel like our own lives are boring or not good enough.

FOMO can sometimes be a positive thing. It can encourage us to be more active, try new things, or connect with others. But when we feel FOMO too often, it can lead to stress, anxiety, and low self esteem. We start comparing ourselves to others, even though we don’t always see the full picture of their lives.

Many people around the world experience FOMO. For example, a student might feel left out when they can’t attend a school trip that many classmates are posting about, a young adult might feel sad seeing others having fun while they are stuck at work. These examples show that FOMO can affect anyone, no matter their age or background.

FOMO can also lead to poor decisions. Some people might spend money on things they don’t need, just to follow trends. Others might go to events they don’t really enjoy, just to avoid feeling left out. In the long term, this can harm their mental health and happiness.

To reduce FOMO, we can try to spend less time on social media, focus more on our own goals, and practice gratitude. It helps to remember that what we see online is not always real. People usually only show the best parts of their lives. Everyone’s journey is different, and we should learn to value our own path without comparing it to other.
